O “Polvo” faz parte da Campanha “Limpar o Mar”, uma iniciativa da Ecoteca Olhão que pretendeu consciencializar a comunidade escolar e o sector das pescas para a preservação do mundo subaquático, promovendo uma campanha que visa a alteração de comportamentos.

O Polvo foi feito utilizando os resíduos recolhidos durante a campanha. A ideia do Polvo foi concebida por mim. A execução foi feita com a colaboração dos alunos do 7ºA da Escola Dr. Alberto Iria, dos estagiários da Ecoteca  – David Correia e Tiago Neves, e de outras artistas envolvidas no projecto. Toda execução foi realizada no dia 6 de Maio 2010.

O Polvo vai estar exposto na Ecoteca até 28 de Maio. De 31 de Maio a 4 de Junho, no Jardim do Pescador Olhanense. De 5 a 13 de Junho no Ria Shopping  e desde 30 de Junho e por prazo ainda não determinado, novamente na Ecoteca Olhão.

Gostaria de agradecer a todos aqueles que de uma forma ou outra estão envolvidos neste projecto, pois sem a sua colaboração e entusiasmo, não seria possível concretizá-lo.

Este mês estou trabalhando num projecto transitório de arte urbana, em favor das crianças do Centro de Acolhimento Temporário “Gente Pequena” de Vila Real de Santo António; foi-me foi pedida a criação do conceito e desenho para uma árvore de Natal no âmbito da reutilização e reciclagem. Estou também a trabalhar com as crianças em ateliers para criar enfeites para a árvore.

Trabalhando numa colaboração estreita com a ADRIP*, a CIIPC/CMVRSA* e as crianças do Centro “Gente Pequena”, a árvore vai ser construída com garrafas plásticas vazias, recolhidas em restaurantes locais e também “doadas” por alguns residentes. Serão também recolhidos outros materiais na Ria Formosa, junto a Cacela Velha. A árvore estará exposta do dia 30 de Novembro de 2009 a dia 6 de Janeiro de 2010

O Centro de Acolhimento Temporário “Gente Pequena” é uma instituição de solidariedade social que acolhe crianças até aos 16 anos de idade.

A feitura da árvore vem no âmbito de uma campanha de recolha de donativos para as crianças residentes no centro; pedimos a ajuda de todos e que contribuam com o que possam para fazer a vida destas crianças mais agradável e para dar-lhes um Natal mais feliz. São de primeira necessidade produtos de higiene, calçado e material escolar, mas também são bem vindos brinquedos, livros, roupa e tudo o resto. Para mais informação visite o blog do CIIPC.

Os destinatários desta campanha de donativos vão ser envolvidos na construção da árvore de Natal e serão também convidados especiais no dia 5 de Dezembro, aquando da abertura do Mercadinho de Natal.

Reusing plastic bottles to create a Christmas Tree

This month I am working on a public art project for the children of the Centro de Acolhimento Temporário ‘Gente Pequena’ de Vila Real de Santo António – a social solidarity institution that cares for children up to the age of 16.

Working in close collaboration with ADRIP*, CIIPC/CMVRSA* and the children, we are making a Christmas tree out of re-used materials including empty bottles from local restaurants and other materials picked up from the Ria Formosa.

The tree will be used to aid a donation campaign to collect school materials, books, clothes, toys, hygiene products and other gifts for the children and the children are participating in the making and installation of the tree at the centre of Cacela Velha.

I was asked to come up with the concept/design for the tree and I’m also running workshops with the children and providing artistic direction.

The tree will be at Cacela Velha from 30 November 2009 until 6 January 2010.

The New Art Exchange and the Monitoring Group in Nottingham, via A-n magazine, asked artists to submit their ideas for a rural digital photography project involving the Portuguese community in and around Boston.
Having been selected, my idea centres around the Portuguese word “saudade” – which has connotations with nostalgia – and uses objects as prompts for reminiscence through a series of workshops with the local community.

Based on the outcomes from the workshops, the artist and participants will exhibit photographs and objects representational of the word “saudade” together with definitions of the word and a ‘precious memory book’.

The project exhibited at The Gallery of Justice in Nottingham in October 2007.

Initially working as a volunteer transcribing and categorising memories from postcards and emails, I was later brought in to select memories to be used at the reopening event for the Royal Festival Hall.

A people’s history showing memories from all eras is now on display in Spirit Level in Royal Festival Hall. Entry is free.

The project, developed by Lumina, has been funded by the Co-Op and supported by the Children’ s Scrap Project (Hackney).

The Thames Festival is on 15th and 16th September 2007.

Through the delivery of workshops the participants were able to learn more about the tradition of Carnival and the importance of recycling in the wider community by making costumes from found/collected materials. The project culminated in a Carnival parade.

The work highlights the plight of polar bears – and the planet – as a result of climate change.

‘Polar Bear’ is an expression of today’s world with its magnificence and beauty as well as its problems and its disputes typical of living organisms that are born, grow, change, evolve, die and are in constant flux.

The Love London Recycled Sculpture Show was launched as part of London Sustainability Weeks.

‘Polar Bear’ can be seen at the Sun and Doves pub, 61-63 Coldharbour Lane, Camberwell London SE5 9NS from June 5th until October 15th 2007.
